Most of our carpentry work arrives attached to a floor. Baseboard has to come off, the floor goes in, and the trim goes back or gets replaced. The honest test of trim work is what happens where the wood meets an imperfect wall. The fast approach is to nail it straight and fill the gap. The right approach is to scribe the piece so it follows the wall, and use caulk to finish a joint rather than to hide one.

That distinction is most of the labor difference between two trim quotes, and it is entirely visible once the paint is on and the light is raking across it.

We do not advertise a single per-square-foot number because real flooring projects are not single-variable equations. Here are the factors that move the price up or down on a typical finish carpentry install.

    Profile and material

    Paint-grade MDF trim is the economical choice and does the job in most rooms. Stain-grade hardwood costs more in material and considerably more in labor, because every joint has to be cut to a standard that a paint finish would forgive.

    Matching an existing profile

    Older homes frequently carry trim profiles that are no longer manufactured. Matching them means either sourcing a close equivalent and adapting it or having a profile milled, and that changes both cost and lead time. It is worth establishing at the estimate rather than on install day.

  3. 03

    Wall and floor condition

    Trim reveals everything. Walls that bow, floors that fall away, corners that are not square - all of it shows at the baseboard line, and correcting for it is scribing work that takes time. This is the single most common reason a trim quote differs between contractors.

Can you match the trim in my older house?
