Choosing a floor is mostly a process of ruling things out.

The hardest part of a flooring project is not the installation. It is standing in front of a wall of samples that all look reasonable and having no framework for deciding between them. Almost everybody chooses by feel, and feel is a poor guide — the softest carpet on the wall is frequently the one that will look worn first, and the plank that photographs best is often wrong for the room it is going in.

What we do is narrow it. Which room, how it is used, who walks on it, whether there is water or a dog or strong afternoon sun. Those answers rule out most of the wall, and what is left is two or three genuine candidates you can decide between on how they look rather than on how they will perform. That is a far easier decision, and it is the one most people actually want help with.

Samples belong in your house, not in a showroom.

Showroom lighting is designed to flatter, and it does. The same board looks different against your trim, under your windows, next to cabinets you are keeping. A colour that reads warm and rich on a display wall can read orange in a north-facing room, and a grey that looked contemporary can go flat under warm bulbs.

This is why we bring samples to the house as part of the estimate rather than expecting a drive to a showroom. It is also why we do stain samples on your actual floor before any refinishing work — stain behaves differently on different species and on wood that has already aged, and a test patch you have lived with for a day tells you more than an hour of deliberation ever will.

    The shortlist comes to your home, in your light, against your trim and cabinets. This is where most options get ruled out, quickly, and it is far easier than deciding in a showroom.

    Test the colour

    On refinishing work we put stain samples on your actual floor and leave them. Stain behaves differently on different species and on aged wood, and a patch you have lived with beats any colour card.

    Fixed quote

    Once the material is settled you get an itemised, fixed quote inside five business days — materials, prep, labour and removal, with the subfloor findings written in rather than left as a surprise.

The selection help on this page is about surfaces — material, color, finish and how they flow between rooms. Beyond selection, we do take rooms on properly: full room remodels including kitchens and bathrooms, interior painting, and the finish carpentry that makes a room read as finished. Plumbing and electrical on a remodel are carried out by licensed trades we bring in and coordinate.

What we are not is a full-service interior design studio, and we will not pretend to be one about furniture, lighting or window treatments. We also do not take on structural work — moving load-bearing walls, altering the roofline or extending the footprint. If you are already working with a designer, we are glad to work alongside them.

What is the difference between this and an interior designer?

A full-service interior designer handles the whole room — furniture, lighting, window treatments, layout. What we do is narrower and deeper: choosing the right floor for how a room is actually used, and the colour and finish that will still look right in ten years. If you are working with a designer already, we are happy to work alongside them.

Can you help if I already know what I want?

Of course, and plenty of people do. Where it still helps is the checks that are easy to miss — whether the product suits the subfloor, whether the wear layer matches the traffic, whether a colour that looks right in a showroom will look right in your light. If everything holds up, we say so and get on with the install.

Do you bring samples to the house?

Yes, always, and it is the single most useful part of the process. Showroom lighting flatters everything. Flooring colour behaves very differently against your own trim, your own cabinets and your own windows, and a sample that looked perfect on a wall regularly gets ruled out in ten seconds at home.

Can you match new flooring to floors we are keeping?

Often, with one honest caveat: your existing floor has aged and changed colour with light exposure, so brand-new material in the same species will not match on day one. We sample against the actual floor rather than working from a product name, and sometimes the better answer is a deliberate contrast rather than a near-miss.
