Installation
Hardwood flooring is the long-term choice. Real wood can be sanded and refinished decades from now, which no manufactured product can match, and in an older La Crosse home it suits the architecture in a way a printed floor never quite does. It moves with humidity, so it belongs above grade over a wood subfloor rather than in a basement.
Luxury vinyl plank is the waterproof workhorse and the thing we install most. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, basements, and anywhere kids and pets are hard on a floor. Its rigid core does not absorb water at all, which is exactly what a Wisconsin mudroom needs from November through April.
Laminate gives a very hard, scratch-resistant surface at a lower cost. It is water-resistant rather than waterproof, so it belongs in dry rooms - bedrooms, living rooms, hallways - rather than anywhere that sees standing water.
Carpet still clearly wins in bedrooms, on stairs and in basement family rooms. Warm underfoot on a January morning, quiet, and safer on stairs than any hard surface.
Tile and stone is the right answer for shower floors and surrounds, entries that take real weather, and anywhere you want a surface that outlasts the house.
Refinishing and coatings
Floor refinishing brings a floor you already own back to new for a fraction of replacement cost. If your hardwood has gone dull, scratched, or gray in the traffic paths, this is almost always the smartest money you can spend on it.
Epoxy and concrete coatings handle garages, shops and basements. In Wisconsin the strongest argument is road salt - a sealed floor stops the de-icing chemicals that come in on vehicles all winter from attacking bare concrete.
What a La Crosse home specifically needs
Two local realities shape nearly every project here. The first is winter. Melting snow, road salt and wet boots come through the door for months, which means entries, mudrooms and the paths off them want waterproof material rather than something that merely tolerates a wiped-up spill.
The second is the humidity swing. Wisconsin runs humid in summer and very dry through a long heating season, and wood expands and contracts across its width in response. That is why flooring has to acclimate inside the home before installation - letting it balance with the house is what prevents gaps opening the first winter. It costs days nobody can see, which is exactly why rushed crews skip it.
Basements are their own question
A lot of La Crosse homes have basements worth finishing, and the flooring rules down there are different. Concrete slabs pass moisture vapor upward from the ground continuously, even when the slab looks dry, which rules out solid hardwood and makes laminate risky. Rigid-core luxury vinyl over a proper moisture barrier is the usual answer, with carpet an option in a dry, well-managed basement family room.
